Learning how to remove the doors from your Jeep allows you to customize your off-roading experience. Read on to learn more about how to take the doors off a Jeep and why it can be beneficial.

Remove the Doors from Your Jeep: Step-by-Step Guide

To take the doors off your Jeep Wrangler, you’ll first need to fold down the side mirrors and then roll the windows down (assuming your model has windows) to keep the glass protected. Then, follow these steps:

  • Remove the Safety Strap: Remove the black safety strap on the inner part of the door where the hinges are located. Simply unhook it from the door.
  • Unplug the Writing Pigtail: If you have a Jeep Wrangler with power windows and locks, your next step will be to unplug the wiring pigtail. You’ll find it on the inner part of the door; press the release on the plastic clip and it’ll unplug.
  • Remove the Bolts: Where the door meets your Jeep Wrangler’s body, you’ll find two bolts that need to be taken out. Close the door without latching it shut. There’s a nut at the bottom of each bolt that you’ll need to remove. Using a 13-mm socket, turn counter-clockwise to undo the nuts. Make sure you don’t damage the paint!
  • Take Off the Door: After you’ve removed the nuts, put your hand through the open window and grip the door handle. Grip the outside of the door handle with your other hand. Lift straight up to remove the door from the Wrangler.
  • Keep the Doors Safely Stored: Place them on a soft blanket with the interior side down — and keep them somewhere safe and dry.

And that’s all there is to taking apart your Jeep! You can also lube the door hinges before reattaching, so that next time you take the doors off, they’ll disconnect from your Wrangler more easily.
